Tokyo National museum has the most important cultural heritages in Japan. Buddhism statues and paintings are amazing, and also this is a place you can see real Japanese swords and old Edo period kimonos.
As you might already know, some of Japanese artists and architects are world famous. This is called “My Sky Hole” by Bukichi Inoue, in the courtyard of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum. His artworks are also in Italy and Spain.
The building of the National Museum of Western Art is designed by Le Corbusier, one of the greatest architects in the 20th century. Now the museum is looking for the possibility of being assigned as UNESCO World Heritage site.
This huge monument is at the National Museum of Nature and Science, representing a blue whale. It also has a model of a dinosaur, very popular among young children.
An art college is nearby the museums and an old Western music hall is also here. This is the oldest Western style music hall made in wood in Japan. Now open to public as a museum and they also have concerts.
Around the museums in the Ueno Park, you’ll be able to find old downtown streets. Ameyoko Shopping Street is the most famous for traditional foods, people get together here from all over Japan to find something special.
In the museums in Ueno, precious artworks arrive from all over the world. And each exhibition has is original gifts created only for that temporary exhibition. For example these are cookies for an exhibition of the Egypt collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Ueno is on the way from the Tokyo city center to Asakusa, famous downtown area. Easy to stop by here by car or train.
